RALEIGH, N.C. (August 22, 2016) - Dr. Stephen C. Scott, President of Wake Technical Community College, is pleased to announce that Wake Forest resident Hannah Moyles has been named the 2016 Scott Scholar. As a Scott Scholar, Moyles will receive up to $3,500 to cover tuition, fees and books for the year. She will also receive a laptop computer, a summer internship placement, and a senior-level administrator to serve as a mentor, along with regular one-on-one sessions with President Scott. It’s Wake Tech’s most prestigious and sought-after distinction.

“I'm extremely honored to be chosen as the Scott Scholar,” Moyles says, “and very thankful for this opportunity. I'm very excited to represent Wake Tech, and to be able to work with college faculty and Dr. Scott throughout the year.”

Moyles was valedictorian of her 2013 graduating class at Wake Forest-Rolesville High School. She attended Duke University for two years, majoring in neuroscience and then English before realizing it wasn’t where she wanted to be. She transferred many of the credits she had earned at Duke to Wake Tech, enrolling in the Culinary Arts associate’s degree program.

“I’ve always loved cooking, so I thought, why not!” Moyles says. “It was the best decision I’ve ever made. I look forward to coming to class now. That’s the difference.”

In addition to her academic achievements, Moyles’ leadership and community service activities helped her earn the scholarship. She is a sewing volunteer at WakeMed Health and Hospitals, and created her own charity, “From Ewe to You,” to collect and donate items to homeless shelters. She is currently pursuing three degrees – Culinary Arts, Baking and Pastry Arts, and Hospitality Management – and plans to graduate in 2018.

“I’m proud of all that Hannah is doing,” says Dr. Scott. “She exemplifies the commitment and achievement our Scott Scholars program was created to reward.”

The Stephen C. Scott Presidential Scholarship program was established in 2012 with a $25,000 endowment from Wake Tech alumni Mark and Rachel Selisker. It is a merit-based scholarship designed to provide leadership development opportunities for outstanding students in associate’s degree programs at Wake Tech.
