RALEIGH, N.C. (April 11, 2011) - Wake Technical Community College President Stephen Scott recognized 16 employees and four community partners for their dedication to the mission and vision of Wake Tech. The awards are sponsored annually by the Wake Tech Foundation, which receives and administers private sector funds for programs at the College. US Foodservice sponsored the awards dinner at the Raleigh Convention Center and Curtis Media COO Phil Zachary served as guest speaker.

Eight faculty members received the college's Excellence in Teaching Award:

  • Jeffrey Humphrey - Academic Support
  • Joe Haigler - Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences
  • Gary Randall - Applied Technologies
  • Marilyn Terrill - Business Technologies
  • Jill Mikulecky - Computer and Engineering Technologies
  • Kathryn Allen - Continuing Education
  • Carrie Bartek - Mathematics and Sciences
  • Angela Washington - Health Sciences

Eight staff members received the Excellence in Service Award:

  • Darryl McGraw - Executive
  • John Saparilas - Deans
  • Santrell Caison - Directors and Managers
  • Michael Bussey - College Support - Professional
  • Thu Washington - Student Support - Professional
  • Heather Buck - College Support - Technical/Paraprofessional
  • Dianne Lloyd - Student Support - Technical/Paraprofessional
  • Delores Brubaker - Clerical

Each faculty and staff winner received a plaque and a cash award. In addition, two winners were named Wake Tech's Instructor of the Year and Staff Member of the Year and will represent Wake Tech at the statewide NCCCS Excellence Competition in 2012.

The two winners are:

  • Angela Washington, Instructor of the Year
  • Darryl McGraw, Staff Member of the Year

In addition, Wake Tech honored four community partners. GlaxoSmithKline was named Corporate Benefactor of the Year for its support of Wake Tech over the past 24 years. GSK has donated more than $350,000 to the Wake Tech Foundation since 1987 and continues to contribute $10,000 to its endowed scholarship fund each year. GSK has also donated much-needed equipment.

The Individual Spirit of Giving award went to Tri Properties Chairman Robert "Roddy" Jones. An active philanthropist, Jones established one of Wake Tech's largest endowed scholarship funds, currently valued at $110,000. To date, it has assisted more than 40 high-achieving students in the hospitality management program.

Cary Police Chief Pat Bazemore received the Distinguished Alumni Award. Bazemore began her law enforcement career in 1986 after graduating from Wake Tech with a degree in Criminal Justice Technology. She went on to earn advanced degrees as she rose through the ranks of the Cary Police Department.

Foundation Board member John McKinney was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award. McKinney has served on the Foundation Board of Directors for the past nine years and has been crucial to the Foundation's efforts to increase giving through its annual campaign - taking it from $500,000 in 2003 to over $2 million in 2010.

The Wake Tech Foundation's mission is to partner with corporations, foundations, and individuals to support Wake Technical Community College's institutional and instructional needs. In the 2009-2010 academic year, more than 250 students continued their education with the help of a Foundation scholarship or emergency financial assistance loan. To date, more than 280 employees have received financial assistance to pursue their bachelor's or master's degree, doctorate, certificate, licensure or other professional development through the Foundation's tuition assistance program.
